FEATURED DESIGNER

Jane Mistry

Trained at The Royal College of Art my relationship with pattern has been a lifelong love affair. Having a childhood in the 1970's, I was fascinated by the bold patterns of the era. An influence which remains with me today.

In 3 words describe your pattern design style?

Bold, contemporary, Clean.

What is your work & design process?

I start by sketching or painting motifs in black acrylic ink, focusing on strong lines and bold shapes. These are then refined in Illustrator, where I develop the forms and explore colour. Line or shape always leads my process, with colour and repeat coming later. I enjoy working with both simple two- or three-colour prints and more vibrant, layered palettes when the design calls for it.

Where do you find your design inspiration?

My inspiration comes from abstract shapes, nature and everyday objects. I’m drawn to simplifying forms and using them as a base for patterns. I often find unexpected ideas in ordinary moments, and I’m especially influenced by the clean lines and structure of mid-century design.

What advice would you give to new designers?

Stay aware of trends and be flexible, but never lose sight of your own style and process. Your unique perspective is your biggest strength, and there’s space for it in the design world. Adapt and grow, but don’t compromise what makes your work original. Trust your instinct for shape, pattern, and colour—these are what give your designs authenticity.
