Eugène Séguy Science and Textiles inspiration

Eugène Séguy (1890 – 1985) was a French entomologist who published many portfolios of illustrations and designs from the turn of the century to the 1930s who worked in both the Art Deco and Art Nouveau styles. Séguy wanted to use his artistic skill to glorify the sublime beauty of nature, creating what he called a ‘world of sumptuous forms and colours.’ He then transformed these beautiful illustrations into textile designs. Incredible – see more here.

Zhou Fan Layered Dreamscape inspiration

Chinese illustrator Zhou Fan has a distinct Japanese quality in his art and visual explorations. Fan explains ‘ My paintings are based on dreams that I had as a child of many many jellyfish floating in the sky, some of which fell to the ground on parachures and became mushrooms. These dreams had a strong impact on me, and I remember them vividly.‘ Patternbank love Fan’s amazing dreamscape visions that use colour, texture and strange subject matter which create some mesmerizing imagery.

Collaboration at Cope Arnold Darkness and Beauty inspiration

Nicolas Alan Cope and Dustin Edward Arnold are two talented photographers who met through a commercial project in 2007 and began their first collaboration in October 2009. They combine the mediums of painting, chemistry, sculpture, fashion and installation to great effect creating some impressive projects. Stamen (2010) featured here, shows their interest in the abstract applied to conventional floral arrangements, evoking a dark and almost decaying beauty that transpiers into other areas of their work. Have a look at their ongoing projects at cope-arnold.com.

Megan Greene Distorted Botanical inspiration

Megan Greene transforms nature prints of paintings by John James Audubon, a nineteenth-century artist known for his realistic yet highly theatrical depictions of “Birds of America”. Greene uses coloured pencils and collage elements to transform and alter the original scenes, sometimes turning them on their heads or sideways. Patternbank love the way birds, flora and fauna become camouflaged within elaborate and decorative patterns creating a distorted view of these beautiful images. Greene lives and works in Chicago, Illinois you can see more of her work at megangreene.com and secristgallery.com
