Lance Letscher Collage King inspiration

Collections of old books, letters, recipes, children’s story books, album covers and found papers are meticulously cut and pieced together by the renowned collage artist Lance Letscher. Letscher’s attention to detail and eye for colour and composition is remarkable and his growing international reputation has resulted in solo shows in England, France, Germany, Poland and Spain. The comparison to quilt making is apt when you know of his wife’s collection of quilt blocks and patterns. The way the materials are sliced into strips, squares, wedges and then re-formed into crystal-like patterns of depth and texture is just beautiful. Lance Letscher : Collage (UT Press Fine Art Series) is a limited edition of 250 signed copies, a nice edition to any designer / book collector.

Hollis Brown Thornton Memories inspiration

Dealing with themes of memory and change, Thornton uses family photos, pop culture, world events, and outdated media to illustrate the modern relevance of these past objects and events. The use of erasure and fragmentation represent memory’s imperfections. Pixelation and computer manipulation represent the physical world merging with the digital, as the digital world is one of contemporary society’s recent cultural evolutions. The marker drawings represent the accumulation of things that were once valid but have lost their original importance. The drawings represent the paradox of what to do with things that were once meaningful yet no longer serve the same purpose. Check more on his website or Flickr.

Our Exquisite Corpse Huichol Beaded Skulls trend forecasts inspiration

‘Our Exquisite Corpse’ teamed up with the Huichol people of western Mexico to produce these intricately beaded skulls. Each of the heavily beaded pieces has been decorated by various artists from the Huichol, using traditional symbols and designs arranged within the patterns, making every skull a completely unique piece of art. The Huichols are decendants of the Aztecs and believe in the Sun God, ancestral spirits and four principal deities – Deer, Corn, Coyote and Eagle. The Sierra Madre Mountains are their home and the Huichol have a long history of creating beaded art, which is a treasured part of their culture. Each skull is cast from resin and hand beaded onto a layer of wax. See more from ‘Our exquisite Corpse’ on their website.

Hole School Street Art Sten & Lex graphics

Street art takes many forms, Patternbank stumbled across these unique and dynamic murals and thought we’d share. These hand cut, hand painted creations are the work of Rome based Italian street art duo Sten & Lex. Using a technique they call ‘Hole school’ Sten Lex create huge murals that consist of cut out stencils and blown up photocopied imagery. The duo are best known in the history of stencil making for introducing the halftone stencil technique where the main part of their stencil portraits are composed by thousands of lines. Graphic subject matter is a mix of historical and religious figures as well as Lex herself. They are currently showing at Magda Danysz Gallery in Shanghai until the April 30th so definitely worth a look if you are visiting.
