The Quilts of Gees Bend inspiration

The creativity and skill that went in to producing some of the most unrivalled quilt masterpieces dating from the early twentieth century to the present are those of the women of Gee’s Bend. This small, remote, black community in Alabama, where works have been found by three and sometimes four generations of women in the same family, are quite unique. Few other places can boast the extent of such artistic achievement, the result of both geographical isolation and an unusual degree of cultural continuity.

Gee’s Bend art also stands out for it’s flair with quilts composed boldly and improvisation-ally, in geometrics that transform recycled work clothes and dresses, feed sacks and fabric remnants. For more info you can purchase the fabulous book, The Quilts of Gee’s Bend on Amazon
