Sarah Arnett – The Illustrated Recipe

The amazingly talented illustrator and designer Sarah Arnett can’t fail to inspire you with her impressive portfolio. After initially studying in woven textiles, Arnett graduated from the University of Brighton with a BA Hons in Fashion Design. Her childhood was spent in Africa where she spent hours watching her father in his studio, while he drew and created collages. Much of her inspiration is derived from the the African landscape, with its rich variety of tropical plants which are a key feature throughout her work. Her latest collection for Spring/Summer 2013 ‘Modern Love’ which she has collaborated on with Kim Hunt, displays the deep vibrant colourways of the African terrain. Her latest illustrated work for an exhibition entitled ‘The Illustrated Recipe’ is on show at the ‘Brighton Festival’, until 26th May, see her website for more info.

Francisca Prieto – Between Folds

Chilean artist Francisca Prieto originally trained and worked as a graphic designer, before moving to London to study an MA at Central Saint Martins. Working from her studio based in London, Francisca takes pages from rare periodicals, sheet music and even the insides of envelopes and transforms them into 3d paper masterpieces. Her mathematical attention to detail creates a textural grid revealing glimpses of illustration and pattern. Psychedelic Atmospheres – Kustaa Saksi

Patternbank are loving Finnish born illustrator Kustaa Saksi. We’ve been tracking his creative explorations over the last couple of years and has already collaborated with the likes of Nike, Levi’s, Issey Miyake, Playstation and recently Montecore’s S/S 13 collection. The Fragility of Time – Ignacio Canales Aracil

Patternbank love these delicate sculptures from Spanish artist Ignacio Canales Aracil. The project titled, “The Fragility of Time”, involved collecting plants from gardens and nurseries then pressing them into these fragile sculptures. In return for using the flowers the Charity Foundation of each garden receives a percentage of the sales and each nursery and garden is credited when the sculptures are displayed. The process involves a certain amount of physical effort to press the flowers together without the use of any glue, a tradition although fragile that is made to last, some ancient collections of dried pressed flowers date from 500 years ago. For Aracil tradition is important in his work and the idea of preserving the flowers beauty through death. We think their beauty is certainly captured in a new form for years to come!

Laurie Frick – Daily Walking Patterns

Laurie Frick’s interest in recording data is not surprising when you know she worked in the technology industry. Frick’s somewhat obsessive counting of steps walked, calories ingested, weight, sleep, time-online, GPS tracks, daily mood as colour and food ingested suddenly becomes more meaningful when looking at the art that she creates from all this data. “I think more and more, data will be presented in fantastical ways, more like art,” she says. “It’s not so much any more about data visualised as graphics. The African Queens – Namsa Leuba

Patternbank are loving these photographs by Swiss based photographer Namsa Leuba for New York Magazine’s ‘The Cut’ for a knitwear feature. She was born to a Guinean mother and an Helvetian father. In 2011, she graduated from ECAL/University of art and design Lausanne, obtaining a BA in photography. It’s good to see something that looks new, fresh and edgy with amazing make-up and sets that include chipboard, marble textures and sprayed foliage. Becky Blair – Layers, Line and Texture

Becky Blair’s beautiful artwork was featured in Patternbank’s recent post covering ‘Bristol Affordable Art Fair 2013.’ Surprisingly none of her paintings are planned out, her layers of under-painting provide the groundwork for her landscapes and creatures or figures to appear. Her imagery evolves from a complex layering of glazes, texture, drawing and printing. She allows this to create the spaces for her painting to take shape.
