Molly Rose Freeman – Urban Constallations

Street artist Molly Rose Freeman lets her art transform urban spaces. From soulless, uninspiring surroundings her paintings develop and grow, ‘I use basic geometric shapes so they can become anything, move any way they want. I don’t know what the wall will look like really until the very end. It’s exciting to be surprised, to make something without fully understanding what you’re making. That’s the magic’. Her interest in geometric shapes within sacred spaces, throughout history and culture, have led her to recreate this within urban landscapes. Molly has worked within Street Art groups and outreach programs such as Livingwalls and The City Speaks, in deprived areas throughout the US helping to inject energy and spirit through art. ‘Hole School’ Street Art – Sten & Lex

Street art takes many forms, Patternbank stumbled across these unique and dynamic murals and thought we’d share. These hand cut, hand painted creations are the work of Rome based Italian street art duo Sten & Lex. Using a technique they call ‘Hole school’ Sten Lex create huge murals that consist of cut out stencils and blown up photocopied imagery. The duo are best known in the history of stencil making for introducing the halftone stencil technique where the main part of their stencil portraits are composed by thousands of lines. Graphic subject matter is a mix of historical and religious figures as well as Lex herself. They are currently showing at Magda Danysz Gallery in Shanghai until the April 30th so definitely worth a look if you are visiting.

Megan Greene – Distorted Botanical

Megan Greene transforms nature prints of paintings by John James Audubon, a nineteenth-century artist known for his realistic yet highly theatrical depictions of “Birds of America”. Greene uses coloured pencils and collage elements to transform and alter the original scenes, sometimes turning them on their heads or sideways. Patternbank love the way birds, flora and fauna become camouflaged within elaborate and decorative patterns creating a distorted view of these beautiful images. Michael Dotson – Surreal Neon Futurism

We’re loving these paintings by Brooklyn based Michael Dotson who graduated from the American University in Washington DC in 2011. Incorporating a surrealist mix of Tron like futurism, neon 80′s tinged colours and a juxtaposition of organic foliage, patterns and hard angles these paintings are truly stunning. Sarah Mazzetti – Graphic Collage

This collection of Graphic Collages by Sarah Mazzetti caught our eye this week. The Bologna based artist who’s better known for her bold and vibrant poster designs, was trained in Communication (Bachelors Degree) at Bologna University and in Illustration at IED Milan. She’s been freelance since 2009 and has collaborated with magazines such as GQ Italy and L’Europeo. Mazzetti has since joined forces with Guilia Sagramola and Cristina Dizioni to form Tiara, an illustration and comics label with an enviable list of clients, including the creatively inspiring magazine Anorak. Billy Kidd – Beautiful Decay

These beautiful set of photographs of decaying orchids, roses and leaves were shot by Billy Kidd, an extremely talented photographer based in New York. Usually confined to the bin at this stage of their life, Billy captures the immense beauty, faded colours, wrinkles and fine details of the decaying flowers and foliage on a black background which adds to the subtle drama. Images Distorted By Gasoline – Peter Hoffman

Patternbank are loving Peter Hoffman’s gasoline doused, photographic studies of Fox River. An Illinois based photographer, Hoffman’s work strives for a quiet, studied approach and in this vein, he is often hired to photograph sensitive subject matter. In this series Hoffman uses the backdrop of the Fox River as it meanders through Chicago. The negatives of these mesmerizing images were spray-coated in gasoline and then lit. The process was very hit and miss but we are sure you’ll agree the end visuals look amazing in colour, subject matter and texture. Heather Patterson – Geographic Patterns in the Natural World

Heather Patterson is interested in the imperfections in nature and how perfection can be found in discoveries of certain undisturbed randomness. By recreating geographic patterns and forms, her work finds simillarities with a topographical map and a grain of wood or the gnarls in a tree and veins in the human body. Patternbank love the structure and layering of different textures that can be found in her work, by such techniques as carving, dripping, melting or spraying the surface.
