Andy Ness gained a MFA from the Rhode Island School of Design and a BFA from the Pratt Institute, both being in sculpture. Patternbank though, were inspired particularly by his latest works on paper which have a circus or fairground atmosphere. This collection features horses layered in silhouette against a backdrop of pattern and man-made structure creating a dreamlike combination of elements. Ness says ” my goals were simply to make my compositions grapple with space in a new way. I also set out to confuse myself as much as possible. Every time a drawing felt too identifiable or heavy handed, I added another layer to it, something disparate and unexpected to allow me to see it in a new light.” See more here.
